Serving the King

As a child I fantasized about being a knight and slaying dragons. I’d be part of an elite band that would protect the people of the kingdom. My best friend and I played that game when we rode horses together. We broke off branches the length of swords and brandished them as we went through the trails. We hacked at the trees and bushes that we went by pretending that we were surrounded by a terrible evil army. The nobility of it was also appealing. We would sometimes act out being knighted, tapping a sword on each of other’s shoulders and receiving an oath of allegiance to the death. We committed to be best friends throughout life with a blood oath. If one was ever in need, the other would come to his aid. 

I imagine that is somewhat like when Aaron became the first high priest in Leviticus 6. The oath of loyalty included the shedding of blood, representing the total commitment that was being made before God. A bull was sacrificed. Then Moses used the blood of the bull to consecrate Aaron. He put it on Aaron’s right ear signifying that Aaron must always listen to the voice of God. Blood was put on his right thumb indicating that Aaron was to always do the will of God. Finally, blood was put on the right big toe, marking Aaron’s feet to walk in the way of His righteous God. 

This powerful metaphor helps us understand ourselves in relation to God. God has called us, laid claim on us, and we are His. God sets us aside and demands our loyal service. Peter boldly writes, “you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…” (1 Peter 2:9) We must listen to the voice of God, do the will of God, and walk in the ways of God. God demands nothing less than us living in utter allegiance to Him. 

I have knelt before the Great King of Kings pledging my undying service. I will listen to His voice so that I may know what the King wants me to do. I enact the will of God so that His will is done on earth as it is in heaven. Above all, I walk in His ways, journeying into the heart of His Kingdom. There is no higher consecration, no better life, than being in service to the King of Kings.
