Compassion Moves Us to Serve

That is the same idea that John is conveying in his letter.  “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” (1 Jn 3:17). Indifference is not an option for a follower of Jesus Christ. John challenges us with the question: how the love of God can be in us if we are indifferent. All around us is need – material, physical, spiritual, emotional, and relational. Munholland is not indifferent.

Last Saturday, we had one of our We Serve days which focused on doing chores for older people who aren’t able to take care of their homes the way they had in the past. A group of us served six different families by cleaning cutters, trimming bushes, changing out windows, and trimming trees to name a few. Before we left the church and our groups spread out around town, we took a moment to reflect and pray. Someone who had done chores like this for years and years was Steve Zansler. He was an amazing man who lived by the I John 3 passage. He was always moved by compassion to take care of people in need. He never said ‘no’ when it was in his power to help. He had been a model of selfless service for decades. We remembered him and dedicated our work in honor of Steve Zansler, one of the many saints of Munholland.

It was fun to serve in that way. We had the opportunity to talk with, laugh, and encourage those we helped. In the end, it was a day very, very well spent! May we always be moved by the needs of others.

Blessed to be a blessing,

Jonathan
