Do You Trust the Truth?
that they are searching for the truth, like His followers. Jesus, however, said something radical and revolutionary, “I Am the Way, The Truth, and The Life.” (John 14:6) Truth is not a principle but a person. Truth is Jesus Christ.
Each person has to figure out what to do with that statement. Was Jesus delusional and thought He was something He wasn’t? Was He exaggerating for effect? Was Jesus perhaps a con artist trying to see how far He could push followers to esteem Him, calling Him Messiah or even the Son of God? Or was Jesus exactly who He said He was? A lot of people say, “I think Jesus was a great teacher.” But He couldn’t be just that. No “great teacher” would claim to be God if He wasn’t. You have to choose what you believe.
Don’t know what to believe? “Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”(John 8:31-32). The only way to know the truth of Jesus is experiential. Jesus invites us to trust Him completely. The word in the New Testament that we typically translate as ‘believe’ is “pistuo”. It is so much more than thinking Jesus is the Truth. It means trusting that Jesus is the truth. Organizing your life around that belief.
There is a great parable that highlights this. A tightrope artist set up a rope between two skyscrapers in New York. Crowds gathered around to watch the spectacle with the nagging thought that he might not make it across and back. Some spectators were on the roof with him. “Do you think I can do this?” he asked. Everyone said, “Sure you can.” The man walked across the tightrope and back and everyone cheered. “Do you think I can take this wheelbarrow across the rope to the other skyscraper and back?” he asked. “Sure. Probably. You are pretty good at this.” they said. Sure enough, the man went across the rope pushing the wheelbarrow across and back. The crowds below and above cheered wildly. “Do you think I could go across and back with someone in the wheelbarrow?” he asked. “Well, that is a tough one but why not? You’ve done a great job so far.” They replied. Then the tightrope artist looked at one of them and said, “Get in.”
At a certain point Jesus wants us to go from thinking he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life to trusting Him with our lives. Are you willing to get in Jesus’ wheelbarrow? When you do, you will discover a whole new, spectacular view.
Blessed to be a blessing,
Jonathan
